Supervision for professionals & AASW Accreditation Guidance

Supervision should be a place where you don’t have to perform competence — a space where uncertainty, complexity, and moments of “I’m not sure” are met with curiosity rather than judgement.I hold supervision as a relational and reflective space, because without safety, meaningful growth simply can’t occur. In a field where decisions can carry high stakes, having a space to explore uncertainty without judgement isn’t a luxury — it’s essential. Supervision that honours curiosity helps prevent burnout, sharpen clinical reasoning, and strengthen your confidence to make nuanced decisions.I strive to ensure you leave supervision feeling seen, heard, and equipped with clarity for your next session — whether that’s refining assessment strategies, navigating complex family dynamics, or managing the emotional impact of your work.Imagine a supervision session where your questions, doubts, and reflections are not only welcomed but actively explored — a space where growth feels possible because you’re supported every step of the way.

Quick Story

Before qualifying as a social worker, I spent years working in statutory child protection. Like many in the sector, I was developing my professional identity while working in a high-pressure, high-risk environment. At the time, I didn’t have access to individual supervision. Group supervision was provided, but it wasn’t enough. It wasn't a space where vulnerability felt safe. Asking questions about uncertainty or gaps in knowledge felt exposing, so I learned to keep going, figure things out alone, and hoped for the best.It was only much later that I could see the impact this had — on my confidence, my professional judgement, and my sense of self in the work. In hindsight, I can name the quiet shame that sat underneath not knowing, and the cost of carrying that alone. This experience fundamentally shapes how I practice now. I believe supervision should be a place where you are supported not only to build skill, but to be held in the reality that this work is hard — and that saying so is part of being human.

FAQ — Supervision and accreditation support

My approach is grounded in attachment, systemic, and developmental frameworks, alongside the practicality of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for supporting reflection, regulation, and values-based action. I also draw on attachment and relational models such as Circle of Security, Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), which shape my focus on authentic connection, relational depth, and the use of self in both clinical work and supervision.I adopt a holistic and culturally responsive approach, supporting practitioners to explore the personal, clinical, and complex dimensions of their work. As an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) and Medicare provider, I also draw on a range of interventions including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), parent training, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness-based strategies. This integrative and reflective orientation allows me to support professionals to deepen their insight and confidence while navigating the practical realities of complex clinical decision-making.

If possible, supervision through your workplace is valuable, but many social workers choose independent supervision for additional support, confidentiality, or a fresh perspective. It’s not too early for early-career practitioners to start. Focusing on core clinical skills — such as formulation, treatment planning, clinical reasoning, risk assessment, differential diagnoses, and mental state examinations — builds confidence in practice and lays a foundation for future accreditation.I support social workers with the practice standards in mind, helping you strengthen key skills and language that will be relevant for accreditation. I also share insights from my own experience — highlighting the areas I wish I had focused on earlier — to make the process smoother. Thinking about accreditation early can help you stay focused and reduce stress later.
